The Problem With “New Year, New You”
As I’m entering into this new year, I am invaded by several mottos of “inspiration.”
You’ve probably heard them too:
-
New Year, New You
-
New Year Commitments
-
New Year, New Beginnings
I can honestly say I’ve heard all of these before—yet they’ve never truly motivated me to make lasting changes in the past, present, or future.
Short-Term Thinking, Long-Term Frustration
These mottos often imply that transformation only happens in January.
It’s as if, unless I make a dramatic change right at the beginning of the year, the rest of the year is a loss.
And if that’s true—I’ve already failed.
But then, I saw a phrase that made me pause: “New Normal.”
What “New Normal” Really Means
How I See It
As a career coach, I work with diverse individuals navigating employment, identity, and purpose.
Often, I help clients uncover hidden dreams, shift perspectives, and declutter their schedules.
When we first meet, their current lives feel “normal” because that’s what they’ve grown used to—
but together, we peel back the layers and begin reshaping what’s possible.
Career and Life Are Intertwined
One powerful truth clients realize is this:
Your personal life and your professional life are not separate—they are deeply connected.
To thrive in one, you must tend to the other.
True growth requires alignment—and a New Normal—in all areas of life.
Creating Your Own New Normal
So what does New Normal mean to me?
New Normal is not a motto. It’s a mindset.
It means developing new habits.
It means changing perspectives.
It means stepping outside of my comfort zone consistently—not just in January, but all year long.
The New Normal Invites Growth
-
It inspires me to evaluate what to keep and what to let go.
-
It motivates me to meet new people and seek out new opportunities.
-
It challenges me to explore new adventures, personally and professionally.
And perhaps most importantly, it frees me from the pressure of perfection and the illusion of a January-only fresh start.
New Normal is a process—one that includes trying, failing, reflecting, and succeeding.
